How we research: We haven’t tested these bags hands-on. Bag dimensions and materials come from the maker or the Amazon listing, linked in Sources. Bag rules are quoted from official NFL, stadium and university pages only. “Stadium approved” on a listing is the seller’s claim, not the league’s. We check each bag’s listed size against the written rule instead.
If you’re carrying a stadium seat or cushion into a game, everything else you bring has to pass the bag check too. At NFL stadiums and most big college stadiums, that means a clear bag no larger than 12” × 6” × 12”, or a gallon freezer bag, plus a hand-size clutch.
The 12” × 6” × 12” Clear Bag Rule (From the Official Policy)
The NFL’s clear bag policy allows:
- “Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12”.” The NFL adds: “This includes clear backpacks, clear fanny packs and clear cinch bags that fit within the permissible dimensions.”
- A one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc or similar).
- A small clutch bag up to 4.5” × 6.5”, clear or not, with or without a handle or strap. You can carry it alongside one of the clear options.
- Medical exceptions after inspection at a designated gate.
The same page also says non-approved seat cushions include “large traditional seat cushions that have pockets, zippers, compartments, or covers.” That’s why your cushion choice and your bag choice go together. See our stadium seat rules table for each stadium’s cushion and seat rule.
College stadiums mostly copy the NFL, with local twists:
| Venue | What the official policy says | Twist |
|---|---|---|
| NFL (league policy) | Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC, max 12” × 6” × 12”; clear backpacks, fanny packs and cinch bags OK within size; gallon freezer bag; clutch up to 4.5” × 6.5” | Teams can add stricter rules |
| Nebraska (Memorial Stadium) | Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC, max 12” × 6” × 12” (“bag straps of any kind are allowed”); clutch max 4.5” × 6.5” | Backpacks larger than 4.5” × 6.5” listed as prohibited |
| LSU (Tiger Stadium) | “CLEAR tote bags no larger than 12” x 6” x 12""; gallon freezer bag; clutch max 4.5” × 6.5” | Says tote bags, so a clear backpack may not pass |
| SoFi Stadium (Rams, Chargers) | Clear backpacks and fanny packs permitted if completely clear | No tint, hologram, printed patterns or stickers |
| Allegiant Stadium (Raiders) | Clear bags; clutch up to 4.5” × 6.5” × 2” | Tinted or colored bags prohibited |
| New Ryan Field (Northwestern) | One bag per person up to 12” × 6” × 12”, no clear bag required | No backpacks, regardless of size |
Rules change, and many venues update them before each season. Check your venue’s official page the week of the game. Our rules table links each stadium’s official guide.

“Fits 12×6×12?” compares the listed dimensions with the rule. A bag listed at exactly 12” × 6” × 12” has no margin, and a stuffed bag can bulge past it. Totes and backpacks are clear bags under the NFL policy. The fanny pack and crossbody are also clear bags, not the separate 4.5” × 6.5” clutch, because they’re larger than a clutch.
Best Clear Stadium Bag Overall: BAGAIL Clear Tote Bag
Our take: It measures exactly 12” × 6” × 12”, with dual top zippers and a removable strap. A tote is also the safest style at tote-only schools like LSU.
A tote is the safest clear bag style, because every clear bag policy we checked allows totes. LSU’s policy names only totes. BAGAIL’s tote is listed at 12” × 6” × 12” (about 13.5 L), in 0.3 mm vinyl, with dual top zippers, handles and a removable shoulder strap.
Good to know: at 0.3 mm, it’s the thinnest vinyl here. That’s fine for a game day, but less sturdy than the 0.5 mm totes if you’ll use it all season. Listed at exactly the limit, so don’t overstuff it.
Not for: anyone who wants outside pockets.
Best Heavy-Duty Tote With Pockets: HAOGUAGUA Heavy-Duty Clear Tote
Our take: It’s 0.5 mm vinyl at 12” × 6” × 12”, with a front zip pocket, 2 mesh side pockets and a 35–67” strap.
If you want to organize keys, phone and sunscreen, HAOGUAGUA’s tote adds a front zip pocket and two mesh side pockets to the same 12” × 6” × 12” size. It’s 0.5 mm vinyl, thicker than BAGAIL’s, and the shoulder strap adjusts from 35” to 67”, so it works as a crossbody too.
Good to know: the mesh side pockets are clear-ish, not fully clear. That’s the kind of detail a strict “completely clear” venue like SoFi could question. Check your stadium.
Not for: venues that require completely clear bags with no mesh.
Best Tote With Bottle Holders: Vorspack Clear Tote Bag
Our take: It’s 12” × 12” × 6” in 0.5 mm PVC, with a front zip pocket and 2 side holders.
Vorspack’s tote is 12” × 12” × 6” (the same box as 12×6×12, just listed in a different order) in 0.5 mm PVC, with a front zip pocket and two side holders for bottles or a phone. It’s a good pick if you bring a sealed water bottle or a kid’s sippy cup where allowed.
Good to know: listed at exactly the limit. Bottles and cans have their own venue rules, so check before you pack one.
Not for: venues that ban anything in side holders.
Best Clear Backpack: Paxiland Clear Backpack
Our take: It’s 12” × 10.5” × 6” in 0.4 mm PVC, with padded straps.
The NFL policy explicitly allows “clear backpacks… that fit within the permissible dimensions.” Paxiland’s is 12” × 10.5” × 6”, in 0.4 mm PVC, with padded shoulder straps. It’s narrower than the limit, so it carries comfortably and doesn’t press against the 12” maximum.
Good to know: not every venue allows backpacks. LSU’s policy names totes. New Ryan Field (Northwestern) bans backpacks of any size, even clear ones. Nebraska lists backpacks larger than 4.5” × 6.5” among prohibited items, even though clear 12×6×12 bags are allowed. Check your venue.
Not for: tote-only or no-backpack venues.
Best Mini Clear Backpack: ZJIE Clear Mini Backpack
Our take: It’s 12” × 12” × 6”, with a front pocket and 2 side mesh pockets.
ZJIE’s mini backpack is listed at 12” × 12” × 6”, with a front pocket and two side mesh pockets. That’s more organization than the Paxiland, in a size that exactly matches the limit.
Good to know: the listing doesn’t state the PVC thickness. The same backpack caveats apply (LSU, New Ryan Field), and the mesh side pockets may be questioned at “completely clear” venues.
Not for: venues that ban backpacks or mesh.
Best Clear Fanny Pack: Veckle Clear Fanny Pack
Our take: It’s 8.7” × 2.6” × 5.9” in 0.5 mm PVC, and fits 28–38” waists.
The NFL policy names “clear fanny packs” as allowed. Veckle’s is 8.7” × 2.6” × 5.9” (the listing also gives 8.7” × 2.9” × 5.9”), in 0.5 mm PVC, with a belt that fits 28–38” waists. Hands-free is handy when you’re also carrying a seat cushion.
Good to know: it counts as your clear bag, not your clutch, because it’s larger than 4.5” × 6.5”. Check whether the belt fits you before ordering.
Not for: waists over 38” (per the listing).
Best Clear Crossbody: PACKISM Clear Crossbody Bag
Our take: It’s 8.7” × 2.4” × 6.1” in 0.5 mm PVC, with PU leather sides.
PACKISM’s crossbody is 8.7” × 2.4” × 6.1”, in 0.5 mm PVC with PU leather sides. It looks more like a purse than most clear bags.
Good to know: PACKISM itself warns that bags with opaque trim or iridescent finishes may need to be confirmed with your venue. The leather sides are opaque, and SoFi requires bags to be completely clear. Allegiant prohibits tinted or colored bags.
Not for: “completely clear” venues like SoFi.
How to Choose a Clear Stadium Bag
1. Start with your venue’s style rule. Totes pass almost everywhere. Backpacks are banned at some venues (New Ryan Field) and not named at others (LSU names totes). Fanny packs and crossbodies are fine under the NFL policy if they’re clear and within size.
2. Fully clear beats “mostly clear.” SoFi says bags must be completely clear, with no tint, hologram, printed pattern or stickers. Allegiant bans tinted or colored bags. Leather trim, mesh pockets, logos and iridescent finishes are the details most likely to get a second look.
3. Leave margin. A bag listed at exactly 12” × 6” × 12” can bulge past the limit when it’s stuffed. If you carry a lot, a slightly smaller bag (Paxiland, 10.5” wide) is safer.
4. Thicker PVC lasts longer. 0.5 mm vinyl or PVC (HAOGUAGUA, Vorspack, Veckle, PACKISM) is sturdier than 0.3 mm (BAGAIL). It matters if you’ll use the bag every week of the season.
5. Don’t forget the clutch. Under the NFL policy, you can bring one clear bag plus a small clutch up to 4.5” × 6.5”, clear or not.
6. Pair it with an allowed seat. If your stadium allows cushions only, a thin closed-cell pad with no pocket or zipper is the safest bet. See our stadium seat cushions guide. For stadiums that allow seatbacks (Lambeau, many SEC schools), see our best stadium seats guide.
FAQ
What size clear bag is allowed at NFL games? Clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags no larger than 12” × 6” × 12”, per the NFL’s official clear bag policy. You can also bring a one-gallon clear freezer bag, plus a small clutch up to 4.5” × 6.5”.
Are clear backpacks allowed at NFL stadiums? The NFL policy says clear backpacks are allowed if they fit within 12” × 6” × 12”. Individual venues can be stricter. SoFi requires them to be completely clear, and some college venues, such as New Ryan Field, ban backpacks entirely.
Are clear fanny packs allowed at stadiums? Under the NFL policy, yes, if they’re clear and within 12” × 6” × 12”. A non-clear fanny pack only passes if it fits the 4.5” × 6.5” clutch size.
Do college football stadiums use the same clear bag policy? Many use the same 12” × 6” × 12” rule (Nebraska, LSU), but details differ. LSU names clear tote bags, and New Ryan Field (Northwestern) doesn’t require clear bags but bans backpacks. Check your school’s official page.
Can I bring a stadium seat cushion and a clear bag? At most NFL stadiums, yes. A cushion is a separate item, not a bag, but it usually can’t have pockets, zippers or covers. Some stadiums also limit cushion size. See the stadium seat rules table.
Is a bag “stadium approved” if the listing says so? Not necessarily. “Stadium approved” is the seller’s claim. Compare the listed size and material with your venue’s official rule, as we did in the table above.
