Neyland holds more than 100,000 fans. Tennessee publishes its seat rule in two official places, and they say the same thing. The Clear Bag Policy allows “a seat cushion with no arms or pockets.” The Gameday Central prohibited items list bans “Stadium seats with arms and/or pockets” and permits “Seat cushions without arms or pockets.”
What the Neyland Rule Means
- Cushions are fine. A plain foam or padded seat cushion with no pockets is the safe choice.
- No armrests, no pockets. That rules out nearly every reclining bleacher chair sold online, since almost all have arms, cup holders or zippered pockets.
- Seat backs aren’t addressed directly. Tennessee doesn’t say “seatbacks allowed” or “seatbacks banned.” It only bans stadium seats with arms and/or pockets. An armless, pocketless seat with a back seems to fit the written rule, but we can’t confirm security treats it that way. If a back is essential, bring a cushion as a backup, or look at Neyland’s built-in chairback sections. Tennessee installed new chairbacks in the bowl in 2024 and updated the design for 2025.
- No width limit is published. Tennessee doesn’t state a maximum width. Bleacher space is tight, so a seat that spills into your neighbor’s spot invites complaints even if it gets through the gate.
- The cushion counts toward the bag rule. The policy lists the cushion alongside the clutch as an extra item, on top of your one clear bag.
Comparison Table
| Seat | Type | Arms | Pockets | Width (listing) | Weight limit | Seat weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crazy Creek Original Chair | Foldable foam chair | No | No | 15.5” | 250 lb | 23–25 oz |
| GCI BleacherBack | Padded seat + back | No | Check listing | 16” | 250 lb | 2.9 lb |
Best Gate-Safe Pick: Plain Foam Seat Cushion
If you want zero risk at the gate, a pocketless foam cushion is exactly what the rule describes. It’s also the only type Ohio Stadium allows without a doctor’s note, so one cushion covers most SEC and Big Ten road trips. Pick one with no zipper and no storage slot.
Best Armless Seat With a Back: Crazy Creek Original Chair
The Crazy Creek has no arms and no pockets. It’s 15.5” wide, rated 250 lb and weighs 23–25 oz. Fiberglass stays and side straps give you an adjustable back, and the whole thing folds flat under the bleacher. It fits Tennessee’s written rule, but remember that seat backs aren’t directly addressed.
Best Padded Alternative: GCI BleacherBack
The BleacherBack is 16” wide, rated 250 lb and weighs 2.9 lb, with an adjustable backrest and no armrests. Check the exact listing for any pocket before game day, since Neyland bans pockets.
What Gets Turned Away at Neyland
- Recliner bleacher chairs with arms, such as the wide seats in our big & tall guide. Save them for high school and youth games.
- Any seat with pockets or cup-holder pouches.
- Heated seats with zippered battery pockets. Many have them, so see our heated seat guide for models to use at less strict venues.
- Umbrellas, backpacks and non-clear bags. These are on the official prohibited list.

Are stadium seats allowed at Neyland Stadium? Seat cushions without arms or pockets are allowed. Tennessee prohibits “stadium seats with arms and/or pockets.”
Can I bring a stadium seat with a back to Neyland? Tennessee doesn’t address seat backs directly. It only bans seats with arms or pockets. An armless, pocketless seat with a back fits the written rule, but bring a plain cushion if you want a guaranteed pass.
Is there a size limit for seat cushions at Neyland? Tennessee doesn’t publish one.
Does the seat cushion count as my bag? No. The policy allows a clutch purse or a seat cushion in addition to one clear bag, 12″ × 6″ × 12″ or a one-gallon clear bag.
Does Neyland have seats with backs? Yes, in certain sections. Tennessee has installed chairbacks around the bowl, and the 2025 design limits how far they recline into the row behind.
Can I bring a stadium seat for medical reasons? Tennessee says medically necessary items must be searched and verified at the gate. Its pages don’t describe a seatback exception, so contact UT Athletics before the game.
