Red Rocks seating is wooden benches with concrete walkways, according to the venue’s FAQ. That means three hours on a hard plank with no back, which is why so many people bring a stadium seat. The good news: Red Rocks allows them. The rule is short, though, and it’s strict about two things, width and legs.
What the Red Rocks Rule Means
- “Under 18″ wide.” Measure the widest point of the seat, including any frame, hinges or straps that stick out. The rule says under 18”, so a seat that measures exactly 18” is a gamble. We only recommend seats that list 17” or less.
- “Cannot have legs.” Anything that stands on legs is out, including folding stools, camp chairs and “stadium chairs” on four feet. A seat that sits flat on the bench is what they want. The rule doesn’t define legs. If your seat has a raised metal frame, expect a closer look at the gate.
- Everything has to fit under your seat. The venue says all possessions must fit under your designated seat, in an 18″ × 12″ space. A thin, foldable seat is easier to stow during standing-room moments than a bulky one.
- Armrests and seat pockets aren’t mentioned. Red Rocks doesn’t address armrests or pockets on seats. It does ban bags with multiple pockets. If you want to avoid an argument at the gate, pick a seat without zippered pockets.
- Management has the final say. The page states that “Red Rocks management reserves final decision on items brought into the venue.”
Comparison Table
| Seat | Width (listing) | Legs? | Weight limit | Seat weight | How it stays put |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crazy Creek Original Chair | 15.5” seat | None, sits flat | 250 lb | 23–25 oz | Your weight + strap tension |
| GCI BleacherBack | 16” | None, seat pad | 250 lb | 2.9 lb | Single buckle strap |
| TravelChair Stadium Seat | 17” | None, sits flat | 250 lb (maker) | 3.2 lb (maker) | 2 buckle straps |
Best for Red Rocks: Crazy Creek Original Chair
This is the classic Red Rocks seat. The Crazy Creek folds flat, weighs 23–25 oz and has a 15.5” seat, well under the limit. It has no legs and sits right on the bench. Side straps let you set anything from upright to leaning back, and the closed-cell foam keeps cold, damp benches from soaking through on spring and fall shows.
Good to know: the LongBack version is a couple of inches wider. Crazy Creek’s pages say 2” or 2.5”, which puts it close to the limit, so stick with the Original for Red Rocks. It’s rated 250 lb.
Best Padded Back: GCI BleacherBack
GCI lists the BleacherBack at 16” wide, 12.3” deep and 16.7” tall, with a 250 lb capacity and a weight of 2.9 lb. It’s a padded seat with an adjustable backrest and no legs, and a buckle strap can loop around the bench. If you want more cushion than a Crazy Creek, this is the one to get.
Best Lightweight Seat With a Back: TravelChair Stadium Seat
TravelChair’s own page lists the model 1669 at 17” wide, 3.2 lb and rated 250 lb. It has a closed-cell foam seat, a padded S-bend back on a steel frame, and oversized buckles that wrap around the bench. Some Amazon listings for the same model say 1.5 lb and 300 lb. We use the maker’s numbers.
Good to know: at 17” it fits, but with less margin than the other two. It also has front pockets. Red Rocks doesn’t ban seat pockets, but security can be stricter about anything with compartments, so empty them before you get in line.
What Gets Turned Away at Red Rocks
- Folding camp chairs and stools. They have legs.
- Wide bleacher recliners. Most are 20–25” wide. See our back-support picks for these. They’re great at youth sports, but they won’t pass here.
- Seats that measure 18” or more. Many “standard” seats with armrests run 19–23”.
- Umbrellas, yoga and camping mats, and tarps. These are on the venue’s prohibited list.
Red Rocks Tips for a Comfortable Show
- Bring a blanket for your legs, not the bench. Blankets up to 40″ × 60″ are allowed, but they can’t spread beyond your ticketed area or onto walkways.
- Mind the bag rule too. Only single-pocket bags up to 13″ × 15″ × 8″ are allowed, or small purses and fanny packs up to 6″ × 9″.
- Pick a seat you can carry up the stairs. Red Rocks is steep. Every seat in the table above weighs 3.2 lb or less.
- Rows 1 and 70 have folding chairs for wheelchair-accessible seating, according to the venue FAQ.
